Somewhere in New York

Sharp eyed reader Ms. S. Fleming spotted this in New York City.
She believes the bottom line reads "RESTURAUNT."

A theory confirmed by the godfather of American Ghost Signs, Mr. Frank Jump.

Win Some, Lose Some

Work looks almost done on the Ensemble Theater expansion, and they haven't covered up this sign. We are hopeful that means they're going to leave it as is.
Which is important...

Because this one is gone.

And so is this one.

And so are these.

Signs of Hope

Call us crazily optimistic, but it sure looks like someone is repainting
this sign at Walnut and 13th.

If you're not convinced, compare it to this
Or a more recent picture from our "Why We Hunt" series.

There are purists in the ghost sign world, (yes, there is a subculture of ghost sign enthusiasts.), who disapprove of restoration.
We here at Faded Ad Art are coming around to the idea of restoration.

Why?

Because someday it will fade again, and be a ghost sign again.
So,the Faded Ad Art official position is "It's better to restore than lose altogether."

Scenes from the Sign Museum

A couple of summers ago, the American Sign Museum hosted a wall dog convention.

Wall dogs are the men and women who paint signs on the sides of buildings.
They created a few while they were there.

Here and Now broadcast a story on painted ads this week, and how they're making a bit of a comeback.

We've featured these before, but they're worth sharing again.

Norwood

Found last week along Montgomery Road.

Just in case you thought we didn't publish original material any more.

And the signature is still visible.
