Reader Submission

Sent to us by Ms. D. Walz on her most recent trip to Batavia, IL.

She reports her daughter caught this one.  (Teaching the next generation of ghost sign hunters!)

A fake ghost sign, on a modern day Portillo's.  We've seen this before, and don't object to it.

Church Furniture

In Omaha, still near 12th and Nicholas.
The Ossit Church Furniture Company appears to have been based in Janesville, Wisconsin.  And also apparently is no more.

Big Signs Sing

This part of Omaha is seeing redevelopment and revitalization.

We can only hope that these beautiful signs survive.

We particularly love the big block letters here.

Omaha

Just north of Omaha's new TD Ameritrade Stadium, there's a warehouse district, with a cluster of ghost signs. This particular building is at 12th and Izard.

We'd like to thank our Western Field Agent, Mr. D.L. Hudson for not only driving us to the airport, but also stopping so we could run around and capture these beauties.

Dr. Strang

On a recent visit back to Nebraska, we stopped in Strang for lunch, and remembered taking this ghost sign from the last time we were here.

But we also noticed some faint lettering off to the side.

Smoke Black Peter Cigars

There was a bar at 12th and Race.  It was the kind of place that opened at 6 in the morning and was closed at night.
With gentrification all around, it finally closed for good.
Now, someone is working on reopening it, and their work uncovered these.

We don't feature glass ghost signs often here, because, well, the nature of glass is to break.
And typically, most we find are not that old or interesting.
Until now.

We believe this one, on the 12th Street side, is an advert for Bold Cigars.

Bored of Elections?

The Board of Elections of Hamilton County used to be on Sycamore, between 6th and 7th, before moving up to the 800 block of Broadway.

Columbus

Offered to us by Mr. B. Johnson from his recent visit to Columbus, Ohio.

A good ghost sign hunter is always ready to capture a shot at a moment's notice.

Odd

It's kind of unusual to see a sign so professionally painted on
such a temporary surface.
But, it's at Race and Findlay, if you're curious.

Mystery Solved?

We've shown you this before; the old Queen City Radio at 12th and Central Parkway.  It's now a bar called appropriately Queen City Radio.

At the time, we speculated the visible circle was an O, or 0, or a 9. We later wondered if it were a tire, not unlike this at 15th and Race.

But 'lo and behold, inside the new pub, a photo of the building's previous incarnation, and complete with a glorious sign.

But, is the mystery solved? Is the top of what we thought was an O or a 0 or a 9 or a tire really a rounded M?

Could be. But looking closer, we see the circular shape also apparently has a border close around it.
Compare that with the border around the edge of the Teem sign, and they don't appear to match.
So, the mystery lives on.

Rhinehaus

Tucked away in the Rhinegeist Brewery is a party room.
And on the walls, old markers indicating we know not what.

Back on McMicken

Lest you think we've been slack in collecting ghost signs first hand, (which quite frankly, we have been), here are some originals.

According to the book "They Built a City", W.T. Wagoners Sons was "...the city's largest producer of carbonated water (ordinary water to which carbon dioxide gas has been added under pressure), fruit drinks, and syrups for fountain service..."

From earlier this summer.

Hot Springs

This beauty comes to us from Mr. M. Walker, during his recent stay in Hot Springs, Arkansas.
There's a lot going on in this ghost sign.  Let's break it down.

Rooms.

?

Selz?

And bleeding through from beneath the Tom Moore, we can see a
Drink Coca Cola.

Beautiful.
